Default 12 valve 2wd to 4wd conversion

So I have a 1997 2nd Gen 12 valve 4wd that was "totalled" in an accident. I bought the truck back for $248.57, considering engine was fine and one of my tires cost more Then that. I recently bought a 1996 2nd Gen 12 valve 2wd. It was the right price and super clean. I want to either make it into a 4wd or something equivalent. I read a few things on here about it, especially How it's easier to sell and buy a 4wd. I have both trucks Already, but the only problem is my 4wd truck, the transmission is going out. So what is the best thing to do at this point? Selling the 1996 is Not an option, Plus it Just had a transmission overhaul. Please help and explain what would be my best bet.

4X4 and 4X2 frames are different. If you have the time money and skills you can mod one to work with a 4X4 setup. Probably easier to find a 4X4 frame that will fit your cab/bed setup.

Transmissions are different too.... and I don't think it is as simple as just changing the O/D housing...... (but, it might be......)
