Default fuel pump sending unit

I am replacing my fuel pump because the fuel sending unit does not indicate a full tank when I fill the tank. I have the bed off the frame and was wondering if there is a way of testing the sending unit on the new pump before I button everything up.
I could hook up the electrical to the pump, install the fuel pump relay and move the float arm up and down to see if there is full indication on the instrument panel, but I am afraid to run the pump dry while I check it out. Any suggestions?

Leave the fuel pump relay out. Gauge doesn't need it.
