I own a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 with Dana 60 front and rear. After driving any real distance when I turn left or right in forward or reverse, there is a clunking noise from the rear differential. Just curious if anyone else has had this issue. Friend suggested limited slip fluid to replace my current fluid. Thoughts or comments appreciated.

 

I would check your u-joints first. And just replacing your gear oil with limited slip fluid isn't going to do anything. You limited slip isn't going to cause a clunk. If your u-joints on your rear driveline are good then you need to make sure that the noise is really coming from the axle. You could have a clunk from the suspension, brakes, shocks or it could be something inside your rear diff.

Does the D60 use the same style LSD as the 9.25??

 

Might also check the end play on the axles(hot). Open or limited slip rear?

 

D60..... Full floater. Axle endplay shouldn't even be an issue.

 

Edited my post! Thanks HeyYou. I'm uncertain what is in the D60 rear for the 2500.

Other suggestions are the bushings in the leaf springs, making sure the leaf spring ubolts remain locked down, etc.

 

You would think but i had a 8 3/4 do this. Adjusted the end play and all was good. lift the wheels off the ground and check everything.

 

I had a similar problem, check the axle tube since the weld might of broken which causes the axle to slightly twist every time you go from drive to reverse or a slight turn.

I found out the hard way, which was to late to re-weld and broke my spider gears.

 

I replaced the drive line u-joints a little while back and didn't help. I will check into your suggestions. Thank you all.
