transmission fluid
Hey guys I have a 94 ram 5.9L magnum auto trans. And it only have 50K miles on it and it's a little bit low on tranny fluid. With only 50K I'm almost positive it's still factory fluid and the book says mopar ATF plus 3 type 7176 . But I'm having trouble finding atf+3 in my local parts store. Everyone only carries +4 and idk the difference and there's universal fluids but I don't trust it. I had a honda accord that you had to run only honda fluid or it would go crazy on the shifts. Any help what I should be running in the truck? And does it have to be chrysler fluids. I can't find any mopar fluids.
“The previous MOPAR ATF+3® formulation was discontinued in 2005 and ATF+4® is recommended for all transmissions filled with ATF+3®.”
A 30 year Chrysler trans tech I used to work with just ran Dex/Merc in stuff he built, from street trucks to drag cars.

I'm not a huge fan of dex/merc, it's a bit slippery for my taste in the friction modifier department... Type-F will work just fine, and it's a little more grabby than +4. Run it in all the 727 based transmissions I build for diesels. Gotta get into the newer transmissions or the FWD models with adaptive learning before they get picky about fluid.
ATF+4 works dandy, 278k miles on 47rh did fluid/filter two times and adjusted the bands last service, I have used "F" in a host of everything and never had a "fluid" issue I have been using Red Line racing ATF for the toy things and it works very well.
