Default gas gauge problems

So today after work I got into my car and the truck said empty and the gauge was bouncing around. I know the truck was full cause I stopped and it only took 12$ to fill it up. So where do I look to fix the gauge? Sensor somewhere hopefully easy. BTW this is the second fuel issue I've had on this tank of gas. I filled it up over the weekend. And it was running like hell all weekend. And it sounded completely different. Could this be a bad batch of gas?. If so can I drain it out?

your sending unit is probably taking a dump. Theres a float on the pump in the tank the gauges the level, and these are known to fail after a while. If your sitting on a stock fuel pump, its probably time to get a new one. Don't get an airtec one. Might want to check your fuel pressure as well if its running like crap.

If you really want to drain your gas, you can read my write up on that here.

Dodge takes the Erasmus approach to fuel gauges, which is why so MANY of them fail (the one in my '92 RC is also intermittent - registering only half-full, at most), and that is;

"When you have money, buy gas. If you have any left over, buy food & clothes."

Anyone know what's the resistance on a gauge sender, empty/full? I came across these neat units http://www.jazproducts.com/fuel_sendunit.html while I was looking tank specs. I'm building a custom tank which would accommodate triangulated 4-links, and I'm not too happy about the stock tank hanging so low under the frame either (there are quite a few scuff marks under the tank after going over sharp rock boulders).

Well today the gauge worked fine until I was on my way home from work. When I hit the brakes it would bunch around really fast then go back to where it should be. Where is sensor for the gauge . Could there be a bad wire somewhere. Where can I start to look and trace some wires. Maby it has a bare spot somewhere and it's grounding out when I turn or hit the brakes

Sounds like a flaky ground. I know in classic car restorations I've done, the sending unit is ground to the tank ring and the ring is one of the first things to rust since it sits in a depression on top of the tank.

Not sure where yours is grounded, I've never pulled the tank on a Ram. But it's easy to trace a ground wire from the sending unit. I would imagine by the 1990s it would be a plug in and go to chassis ground...

Can I reground it to the frame somewhere? And will this affect anything else. I mean if the gauge completely quits working will it bother anything else?

Sure, run a temp length of wire to make sure if it is a bad ground before you mess with routing it and tying it up.

If the gauge decides to completely fall out. Will it affect any other systems? Like will the fuel pump quit and leave me stranded?
