ADDED 26 August - Battery issues today - Autozone test indicates battery was shorting out - chnged batteries but have not driven enough to know for sure if the basic problm is fixed..

Question - could the battery shorting out result in the engine shuttin down???

Thanks

Sure. If the battery shorts, voltage will drop (under, maybe 10 volts?), like turning the key to off position.

Just changed the battery in my Ram. I could jump it but had to keep engine idling above 2000 or the truck would die. Battery was toast, and the truck started and ran fine with a new one.

Default Final - Continuing Mystery

Symptoms - Engine shutdown while running at ambient temps above 90 degrees. All electrical devices would appear to work and engine would crank but no spark to the plugs. After cool down for 45 minutes to 2-3 hours engine would start again. Ignition coil plug wires and plugs, Fuel pump, crank position sensor and ignition relay replaced. ASD and horn relay positions swapped. Engine continued to shutdown but would restart after 10 - 15 minutes after fuel pump was replaced.

26 August the battery went belly up.......would spin the starter then would not. Test of the battery indicated the battery was shorting out.

Final (I hope) fix - Replaced the battery and had no failures as it was driven in 100 degree weather today.

Thank you to all who responded to my request for help. This forum is super!!

I merged these threads, so the solution was actually in the same thread the problem was. Makes searching for the answer easier.

Isn't it amazing what a bad battery will do to these trucks?

Not just these trucks. You should have seen the symptoms in my daily driver (2008 Ford Fusion) when its battery had a bad cell. I thought I was being abducted by aliens!
