About to go look at a low mileage 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 with the V-10. Is that a good engine? What should I look at to avoid on it?

 

Very good engine but not much aftermarket support for building them up. Reliable as the v8s but without the plenum issue. Way more power too. Listen for a lot of noise in the valve covers, I've seen broken rocker arms before though it's rare, seen a couple oil pumps go, saw one that burnt a hole in a piston but that was due to other stuff. Overall a good motor that gets 8-10mpg unloaded or with 15k behind it lol.

 

Yeah, I regularly see them with 300K miles, and still running good around here. (of course, the bodies are rotted away to almost nothing......)

 

Its an awesome engine! But like a member above me stated, not much aftermarket support unfortunately.

 

Shorty headers and ignition. Maybe tb (can't remember) and possibly sct tune

Went to look at the truck and it was sold already. Figured it would go quick it only had 39,000 miles on it.

 

That is something that always amused me about the V10... not the best MPG, but it gets the same no matter what your doing with it.

 

Mopar PCMs, cams, roller rockers, throttle bodies, headers, tuners, and a few others. Used to be an intake manifold and s/c kit. Enough aftermarket support for the average bolt-on guy.

 

7mpg pulling a 10k lb. trailer. 8-10 solo. '99 2500 ram SLT 4x4. Not for joyriding.
