Question re: steering box replacement

I have far too much play on center.

I have 40k old moog upper and lower ball joints
repacked wheel bearings not too long ago
Tie rods are good
Recir-ball box has been "adjusted" but it simply tightens the steering wheel, not the play on center

All tested...with the front end off the ground

Gotta be the steering box at 282k right?!

The u-joints along the steering column look solid. Rocksolidramsteering installed 40k ago.

Seems like an easy DIY job...any pointers from someone that has done this R&R before are much appreciated? Am I headed the wrong direction?

Just washed and waxed too! 70º in December - loving it!

*don't mean to rub it in HeyYou - haha*

thx all, best,
-CTX

Yes, it could be the gear with that many miles. Have you replaced the pitman arm? It has a ball joint like the TREs and is as commonly replaced as the 4wd track bars. Definitely check that before a new box. But if you get a new box, get a Redhead as they are completely rebuilt, not just painted and resealed like parts stores carry. Mark the steering shaft for easy replacement, spray the bolts first with PBblaster. There are many write ups on the net for this. Check diesel forums as well. Oh, and you can keep that 70 crap. Winter is the best season!

Yeah, yeah. Rub it in. It was in the 50s-60s up until Friday here, then the temp dropped like a stone, and it started snowing..... No accumulation to speak of though. (so far.....)

Grab a friend, stick 'em in the drivers seat. Raise the front off the ground. With key on, engine OFF, have your friend GENTLY rock the steering wheel back and forth, just to the point of resistance. (one finger will work for this) In the meantime, you check EVERYTHING in the steering linkage, see what moves, that shouldn't, and what doesn't move, that should. Fix as required.

That said, chances are good that your steering box is just plain worn out. Don't bother with the parts store 'replacement' boxes, you may end up with one that is worse than what you have now. Borgeson, or Redhead will lighten your wallet, but, leave you smiling.
