Question 5.9 360 engine tick at idle

Hey guys new member here! Hope I'm posting in the correct area.
So here it goes...I have a 01 Sport Off-road with the 5.9 and 99k miles and well taken care of, and have a tick that's been driving me crazy. It all started after I changed the oil for the first time last year when I bought it. It had a fresh oil change when I bought it but me being me I always change the oil on any "new" vehicle I buy. I noticed whoever changed the oil before me overfilled it. It was a ways above the full mark on the dip stick. So I drained out what was like 6 quarts and removed the Wix filter. Refilled her with 10w30 valvoline conventional and threw on an M0-090 filter. The next morning after about 2 minutes of startup I noticed a tick or tapping noise that seemed to come from the lower end of the engine around where the oil pan and trans bell housing meet. After a few more minutes the noise slowly went away and doesn't come back once the truck is fully warmed up. Kinda like the Hemi ticks. Just weird it's quiet on cold starts its not until the truck is slightly warm the noise begins. My question, have any of you guys ever experienced this after an oil change? Is it lifter noise? Should I be worried? I can get a video of it and post it up also. I just want to make sure it's nothing serious. The noise hasn't gotten worse over the course of the year either. But any input would be great. Thanks! -Steve

What kind of oil pressure are you getting? Do you have any idea what weight oil was in it? You should put the larger style filters on like the Fram PH8A or equivalent. More capacity and filtering capability.

Exhaust leak? That would make a twisted sort of sense.....

Welcome to DF!

most likely an exhaust leak. i had one on a blown header gasket. sounded like a Sherman tank starting up. would typically go away as it warmed up but i would hear it on throttle. check for leaks in the exhaust manifold.

Thanks guys! Gonna check on the manifold leak, hopefully it's just that and nothing else. And as far as my oil pressure it reads good. Just alittle below 40psi at idle and under driving it goes up to 50-60psi. I have no idea the oil weight that was used previously, I've always ran 10w30 in all my dodge trucks, not sure what you all use or recommend

You need to run 5-30 oil or you'll get lifter noise.. some get away with it but most need
5-30,, if this is a lifter noise..

Running a lighter oil would tend to make lifter noise worse...... Dodge recommended 10w30. That's what I run.

I agree with staying at 10w30. It just makes me curious why the previous oil change had more oil in it than 5 quarts. And after I did the oil change and put in 5 quarts and made sure the level was full this ticking or tapping noise started. It's temperature related tho. Only does it a couple minutes after cold start and then a couple minutes of the noise and it goes away and doesn't return. Still gonna check the manifolds for a small leak, but i have a feeling it is oil related. next oil change I may go with the Wix filter that was on there and see. Sometimes the filters can affect the oil flow. Thanks for all the replies so far! Have a good Christmas guys!
