Exhaust question
I have a 94 ram 5.9L auto single cab 8foot bed. And after Hunting season and much off road my exhaust is falling apart. Leaks at the front of the muffler and hangers breaking off leaving holes. My question is I'm considering doing a new exhaust. And dumping it before the axel. I already have a hollow cat so it's loud but sound good. I have a aftermarket muffler. How much louder is it gonna be moving my muffler forward acouple feet and dumping it before the axel. Or can I cut it off before the muffler and straight pipe it? I herd straight pipe is bad for the motor. I gutted the cat and put a k&n cold air intake and 180 stat in so far and noticed a huge difference in performance. But I don't wanna hurt anything if I just cut it off for now till I can get it fixed. And I'm unsure how loud it will be with my muffler and before the axel. Any opinions or comments would sure be appriated. I can't stand the sound of leaks in my exhaust u can hear the leaks and I hate it
Anything dumped under the truck will reverberate and increase the sound. Back when I was in college, my best friend had an 01 1500 with the 5.2 and his exhaust set up was a hooker aerochamber muffler with turn down tips welded right to the exit on the muffler. It was LOUD, but in a good way! It had some drone on the inside of the truck, but we were young and wanted that loud truck sound. Now I have a 98 with the 5.9 and I put a Thrush muffler in place of the stock one and let it run out the back. It still has that nice sound, but since it also has the side exit it lacks the loudness of the dumped setup. If I didn't have kids who rode with me I'd probably just put on a turn down tip and be done with it, but they wouldn't like the drone. Maybe I'm just getting old, haha!
^^ x2. Dumping will cause all kinds of drone. Keep it out back and get any performance muffler or system. Less drone. Your teeth won't rattle. But if you are a youngin, straight pipe dumped right under the bed. : )
I was gonna kick it out the side right before the tire. Save me alot of money going over the axel. What do u mean by drone? And what about performance issues with Straight pipe. ? Is there any. And I know if I cut it off and leave it exit under the truck it's gonna echo like crazy. I had a dakota I cut it off right after the muffler and it was loud but sounded decent
Exhaust after the cat doesn't make any difference in everyday performance. (unless it is REALLY restrictive.) Dyno tests show a difference of 1 horsepower or less, going from stock muffler, to hideously expensive performance muffler.....
I have factory manifolds and cat followed by Gibson super truck. Cat was gutted. Truck sounds quieter than cat back dumped under honestly. (Muffler fell off a while back and was reluctant to fix) when I reattached the muffler is when I skinned the cat. Doesn't sound bad but it drones bad in OD up to about 60. No performance differences though except the gutted cat since it was clogging (plenum repair probably helped most). I'm still in the process of ordering a new cat hoping to kill the drone some. It does get annoying doing 45 in OD and there is a loud hum from the exhaust

This sound frequency range is typically between 133 - 138hz for cars. This frequency sends the energy through the metal frame, body work, and everything in between (even seats in some cases) and shakes the molecules creating an awful humming sound.
It makes it *******ly impossible to hear anything else.

My name on YouTube is Midnight Wrench Turner, my exhaust is dumped under the cab at the edge of the bed by the previous owner, in sure of work done to it and I'm pretty sure the car is still together. There's a video of the noise. Check it out
Is that straight piped? I watched the dark video. My trucks not too loud and it has a gutted cat. And the precious owner had a aftermarket muffler put on I'd like to keep it cause I looked it up and it's expensive. I'm just gonna cut it off flush on both sides. It's right before the axel. Then the tail pipe is all full of holes and it's cracked right before the muffler rusted and gonna fall off soon. So I'll cut it off and get a adapter to fit inside it and over my pipe and move it forward then buy a 45 degree angle pipe and kick it out right in front of the tire. So it will exit out the side. Is it really gonna be that loud doing that. It's alot less bends not going over the axel. And alot shorter. Does that extremely long tail pipe make it quieter? And all those bends? Cause how far should I keep my muffler from my gutted cat. As far back as possible? Or doesn't matter? Cause if I want to do a 45 degree pipe to make it to the side I'll have to move it forward alot. If It needs to be back as far as possible. I'll switch to a 90 degree bend and that will save me an extra foot or 2 moving it forward
In the other video ( I think it's called dreaded plenum gasket fail, or something like that)you can hear in the truck Windows up and down
It currently has about a foot of pipe after the o2 sensor. I'm planning on side dumping it infeont of passanger tire with a 40 series because I would like to be loud but it's just way too loud at the moment and loud attracts cops
