Default Dana 60 crush sleeve

I'm currently regearing Dana 60, which I intend to install on the front of my truck.
Axle is from 1999 Ram 2500 HD. Came with 3.55 gears
I got limited slip for it and 4.88 gears.
I just found that 4.88 pinion is machined little differently than stock 3.55 was.
There is no room on the pinion to install crush sleeve.
Do I just forget crush sleeve or try to find shims in its place ?
Hmmmm, how important is crush sleeve anyways?

Very important. Verify the part numbers on your gears.

Then again, looking at a pic of one here, they really aren't all that big?

Hope the picture comes through.
One on the left is the old one. Right one is new.
Maybe all I have to do is find out the right shim size in the place of crush sleeve?

What brand gears? I would be tempted to call the vendor, and ask 'em what's up with that.

They are USA Gears brand
It looks like there is Dana 60s with and without crush sleeve.
Depends on design.
Ones without crush sleeve use shims/spacers.
Shims it is. Just have to get the right height to get right preload
I'll probably have to put it together and take apart few times before its right.

I'm just guessing here, because I really don't know, but might there be a difference, internally, in the 2 D60's? The one that takes the crush vs the one that takes the shims, to accommodate the two different designs?

The older 60s use the shims and the newer uses the crush sleeves. Not sure if the newer axles have the provision to just stick shims in there.

All you are doing is putting a spacer between the pinion, and the outer bearing. I doubt there is any difference at all in the housing itself.
