Lose Steering in High Speed
I was out on the interstate doing about 80MPH and the wind was kind of strong. The truck wanted to wonder a bit more than normal. Steering felt lose. At first I thought it was the new tires (Hancook DynaPro ATM RF10 Load range E) but never heard of that problem with these tires. The tie rods, drag link and track bar are all fairly new, less than 20K miles. The ball joints are originals with 166,000 miles on them with many miles towing a 5th wheel. I am thinking it is the ball joints but wanted to see if there was anything else I need to look at. If it is the ball joints what brand is good to go with? Moog, Raybestos Proforged or something else. Thanks for your help
Moog, or XRF for balljoints.
Best bet is, grab a friend, park him/her in the drivers seat, open the hood...
Have friend GENTLY rock the steering back and forth, just to the point where they feel resistance. (engine OFF) While they are doing that, you start looking around at whats moving, that shouldn't be, or not moving, that should be..... Start right up at the column. Work your way down from there.
