Default Missfire when lugging, vacuum issues

I bought a 98 dodge 1500 2wd 5.2 (318) 151,000 miles new trans 5k ago with papers. I am the second owner of the truck and the first owner was an older gentleman that basically putted it around as do i. Always maintenanced correctly is in excellent condition and drives like a brand new truck. When I got it I did a tune up ( oil change, plugs wires ect.). It starts and runs perfectly but when you get it on the highway it runs perfect until your lugging a hill, then it has a slight misfire and if I have the blower on for the vents it sucks it up to defrost until I'm done lugging the hill then the mis goes away and the blower comes back to the vents. I know these little 318's don't have much power but it should be able to pull hills better. Also the trans shifts great until it gets to road gear and it shifts to early leaving it powerless. I can hear the hiss when it's running cold but have took it to the local mechanic and he tells me it's perfectly fine when I know it's not. I'm new in this forum so I apologize if I did this wrong. Please help

Check out the be-all, end-all, plenum thread at the top of this forum. Need to have a look there.

Did you change your plugs? Distributor cap? Rotor? If so, what plugs?

Vent switching is pretty normal. Look in the FAQ section for "Wild Vents".

For the shift point glitch, adjust the throttle valve cable. The procedure is in the manual. Be aware that if you remove the cable end from the linkage stud, it's a horseshoe end so it's removed by pulling directly forward, toward the radiator.

Vacuum leaks can be a real challenge. The venerable Mr. You is correct to steer you toward the plenum topic. You may also have at least one leak elsewhere on a truck that's just become old enough to vote.

A hissing sound when running cold, if it's not present at initial startup but comes on soon afterward, is potentially but not necessarily normal. If it cleans up again within a minute or so, no problem. If it doesn't, or if it comes back after a period of highway speed unladen cruising and especially if it accompanies horsepower castration, problem.

Nice find, though, no matter what, snagging a well maintained second gen.
