Default Transfer case issues

Just purchased a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 sport, it's a regular cab short box 4x4. Transfer case is shot, don't really know what specific tcase it has in it. Wasn't sure if the jeep tcases are interchangeable? Any help would be very appreciated!

NP 231D. Maybe DHD..... There is a take on the back side, round, silver and red, that'll tell ya what model ya got. Basically, anything out of a 98-01 1500 will bolt right in.

Welcome to DF!

Thanks for the info, I'll take a look at it. I've searched online for a while to find a rebuilt kit but they all come up as jeep transfer cases instead of dodge.

On that, I don't think it matters..... Just make sure it is for 98 and up t-case.

Thanks, really appreciate the info. I'm a ford guy, just bought my first ram and don't know much about them. Also I do plan on doing a full rebuild on the 5.9 magnum, the years 94-01 are they all the same? I've looked at rebuild kits on summit eBay and some say the ending years are around 96-97, would that affect my 98 5.9?

Mechanically, they are all pretty much the same, the electronics vary some though. Just get the right sensors for your year, and everything will be good.

Don't bother doing anything with the stock heads, they suck. Just replace them. Odessa, or Clearwater Cylinder head sell New, stock replacements, that have thicker decks, less prone to cracking than the stockers.

Budget for a custom tune then as well. Otherwise, it won't run as good as it should.

Okay so I purchased a transmission w/transfer case, and I also purchased another transfer case. The transfer case alone came off a 2001 ram 1500 5.2 . And the trans/tcase are a 46re/np231. I have a 98 ram sport regular cab short box with the 5.9L. Will the transmission and transfer case from the 97' bolt to the back of my 5.9L?

Yes. however, the 97 t-case has a different shift pattern than the 98 and up.
