Default Cruise control quit, need some help diagnosing it?

The cruise just up and quit working, never had any problem before. I'm leaning toward the clock spring. I checked it for continuity and the connectors for the first and second pin were OK. But the third pin, which is the white wire on the connect has none.

I know the PCM sends 5 volts to the switch and when I checked the connector on the back of the clock spring the wiring that had 5 volts on it, I believe connects to the white wire/3rd pin.

Am I correct on my assumption.

Truck is the one in my sig.

Forgot to mention that the green light on the steering wheel does not come on.

You can download the 96 service manual from here. Wiring diagram for the cruise switch is on page 8W-33-3.

Switch gets power on the Yellow/Red wire. That should be 5 volts from the PCM.

Black/Lite blue wire is the ground for the indicator.

Red/Light green is the return signal from the switch. With no buttons pressed, shouldn't be anything there. Pushing buttons should give you various voltages. PCM interprets what to do depending on voltage it sees on this wire.

If the indicator is coming on, then at least that much is working. Typical failures are broken vacuum lines, or, a trashed cruise servo from having battery acid dripping on it. Yeah, it is RIGHT under the battery. Great plan......

I downloaded the service manual tonight and have been looking through it.

The green light by the ON button does not light up. I'm not getting any power from the yellow/red wire. There is continuity through the clock spring on that wire. Even on the connector on the back of the clock spring there is not 5 volts on the yellow/red wire. I did look at the PCM where that wire goes into the connector everything looked good. If I get a chance tomorrow night I will see if there is 5 volts at the PCM. I'm assuming that is with the key on?

Could be a bad brake (stop lamp) switch. Unplug it and see if you can turn the cruise light on.

This brake switch removes the voltage from the cruise control to shut it off when you apply the brake. If it is stuck or shorted, the cruise control will not work.

I have heard of bad pressure switch ? , the part inside, on your steering that you press with your thumb. Try pushing it in at different place/angle .

Just for the hell of it...did you check to make sure the clip on the cruise control cable isn't broke?

Well, I pulled the connector off the PCM. Pin #11 had 0 voltage and Pin #32 had 5.197 volts. This was with the key on. So is the PCM bad or ? I'm at a loss here unless someone has any suggestions.

One thing I'm curious of is with Pin 32 having 5 volts, if this is the wire that receives signals from the switch.

That's backward...... How strange.

Have someone else press the on/off button on the steering wheel, while you monitor voltage on pin 11. (key on, connectors plugged in to PCM.) Wouldn't be the first time there was an error in a wiring diagram.....

Just for giggles, at the connector on the steering column, see if you are getting 5 volts on the Red/lite gree wire.

Also,
