Default A/c compressor

If the clutch isn't working and u just hear a loose grinding noise do u just replace the compressor or can u do something with the clutch alone. My a/c stopped blowing cold and I have a weird loose grinding noise from the compressor and the clutch isn't engaging at all.

Rumor has it, you can just replace the clutch. I think a couple members have done so, a search might turn up something......

The clutch will not engage if there is not enough 134 in the system. It took an entire can for mine to even engage the clutch then another small can to fill up the system. I would maybe try this before you decide to replace. I thought mine was shot too, but now it blows ice cold air for just the cost of a few cans of 134.

The clutches do wear out and can be changed. If too much friction material has worn away the clutch will no longer engage, easy fix is simply remove the nut on the front of the clutch, remove clutch, remove 1 washer shim, reassemble.

The replacement clutch kit can be purchased on ebay. Make sure you're getting power to the clutch first b4 trying.

Finally got a chance to mess with the compressor today and as soon as I tool the drive belt off it and went to wiggle the pulley it moves about a quarter inch or so sides to side and when I spin the pulley it has a bad grinding noise and is very rough so I think once I replace the bearings it should be working like normal again....

Attempted to replace the bearings tonight and when I went to loosen the bolt the clutch turned with it. So I'm gonna try to put vice grips on it to hold the clutch to the pull so I can loosen the nut tomorrow....

Had to take the compressor completely off. Went to work yesterday and the bearings busted and jammed the pulley and broke the drive belt so I took the clutch off and pulled as much of the bearings out as I could but it looks like they r keeping the pulley from coming off so I guess I'll have to cut it off and go get another pulley at the junk yard and reconnect everything and charge the system back...
