engine and tranny swap
Ok so I have been searching this site for a while now looking for a thread that will help me on my swap. Although I have found plenty that has helped I still have some questions that haven't been answered in those threads.
So here's what I plan on doing. I own a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2 4x4 and a 2000 Dodge Durango 5.9 4x4. I want to swap the engine and tranny from the Durango into my Ram. Now from what I have read in other threads related to this subject is that it will basically be interchangeable, except for the brains.
Now my main question is this.. Will I be able to swap the ecu from the 2000 Durango into my 2001 Ram? They both have the same features just different size engines.
Also what else am I going to have an issue with when I swap the engine/tranny??
All the help i can get would be amazing.
Thanks, Sam

Engine/trans will bolt right in, and hook right up. The 5.2 PCM will run the engine, but, will run lean while in open loop. (not exactly a good idea.) I have no clue if the connector pinouts would be the same for the wiring harnesses at the PCM..... could chase the part number of the rango PCM, and see if it will interchange. (probably, but, best to verify) Of course, you would still have to have the Rango PCM flashed to the VIN of the truck, else, ABS, and SRS would be annoyed. (lights will be on, and they won't work.)
T-case I think is different between the truck, and the Rango..... Doesn't the Rango offer an AWD mode?
Other alternative would be to have your current PCM flashed to run the 5.9. If there is a shop around that will do it, cost would prolly be the same either way.
Welcome to DF!

The transfer case I'm not sure about. From what i heard they are the same for the 5.2 Ram and 5.2/5.9 Durangos. I'm a truck driver so I cant exactly go out to the garage and look haha
Now instead of getting my PCM flashed over to the 5.9 could I just buy a used one off ebay for a 2001 Ram with the 5.9 or would it be smarter to just get mine flashed?
The truck is my daily driver for when I'm home and the Durango is just sitting collecting dust with a bad transmission (yes I'm buying a new transmission for it to swap out) so I would like to keep the down time on being vehicleless to a minimum haha
Again thank you for your help

Depends on the year of the Rango. At some point, they started coming with the NV242 t-case. It just adds a 'full time' 4WD option. Not sure when that started... It's pretty much a bolt-in though.
Poking about, it just might be the 231.... Look at the shift pattern when you get a chance.
I think it would be better to have your PCM flashed for the 5.9. You would have to have any used PCM updated to your vin in any event, and I don't think the cost is going to be all that different...... Plus, with a used PCM, ya never know if everything actually works.....
