Default torque conver question

will a 2500-3000 rpm stall converter help my low end power? i have the 3.9 v6 which is a good motor, but from a dead stop off the line power its kinda gutless untill it hits 2000 rpm. it still has the stock torque converter that stalls at 1600 rpm.

Bumping to around 2200 probably would help, but, you have a small motor trying to move a heavy truck, not a surprise it is gutless.

It's only gutless from a dead stop till about 2000 rpm. It pulls my truck just fine, especially at highway speeds. I'm not wanting a hotrod, just things to help the low end of the motor. He'll I just hauled 2000lbs worth of brick in the bed of the truck just fine. Just need something to help it a bit more off the line. I used to have a 3/4 ton dodge ram with the 360 magnum, and it was the same way on the low end.

I've looked around for one but can't seem to find one over a 2000 stall. Any suggestions?

Jegs, or Summit racing. Either one should have something for you.

Ok, I'll look there. Don't know if this matters, but I bought the truck with a blown transmission, so I took out the 42re and put in a 46re from a 318 v8( its all the salvage had at the time). I still have the 42re and plan on having it rebuilt someday. But would that effect how it drives? I know the gear ratios are a bit different between the two. And the torque converter is bigger in the 46.

Stick with the 46, rebuild that one if you really want to. It's a more stout trans than the 42.

Could also check WITTrans.com, or PATC. (not sure what their website is, google will tell you though.) I am SURE they would have something for you, and could make excellent suggestions for what you want. Wouldn't be a bad idea to chat with them, even if you DON'T end up buying from them.

Ok, I think I'll do that, thank you!

Maybe a stupid question, would the v10 out of a 3/4 ton or 1 ton fit? I know id prolly have to move motor mounts and go with stronger trans. But just a crazy thought I had. Maybe for a play toy project when i eventually buy another truck.

Easier, and possibly cheaper.... to just buy one that has the V-10 already. The 8 liter NEVER came in a half ton truck, and has a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the gas motors. Need a 47 or 48RE behind it.

Of course, with the V-10, I don't think you would EVER complain about 'not enough power'..... And the gas mileage really isn't that much worse. (than the v-8's at any rate....)

Could you put a 10 in a half ton truck? Certainly. But, the rest of the driveline would hate you for it.

Your prolly right lol. Just thought it'd be bad *** to have. Then make a custom badge that says RAM 1500 V10 MAGNUM lol, my truck is a shortbed too. Id prolly burn through back tires like crazy going from 175 hp up to over 300 With even more torque lol. I have been seriously considering putting a 318 in. But don't know how hard it's be to change the whole wiring harness. Or if would be an easy plug and play, or have to heavily modify things.

Find a donor truck of the same year as yours. Grab the engine/trans harness, and PCM. Drop in your V-8, change the PCM and harness, and down the road you go. It's actually fairly easy.
