Power Steering Pump Pulley R&R
What is the best way to remove and replace the power steering pump pulley without removing the pump on my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 3.9L V6 2WD? Isort it even possible? I've never done a pulley before, but I'm pretty mechanically inclined. Any ideas or information is much appreciated.
Need the special tool, which you can rent from the parts store. I don't think you have enough room with it installed though..... I just pulled the pump, bracket and all, then dealt with the pulley in a more convenient location.
Should be like a long bolt, with a nut, and a washer that has bearings in it. That screws in to the pump shaft, then you just turn the nut down to press the pulley back on. Did anything like that come in the kit?
I went through this several times when I had my 2nd Gen. There is a Special Service Tool for reinstalling the pulley but, as HeyYou said, it can be done with a bolt. However, the trick is to ensure the pulleys are aligned; otherwise, the belt will be shredded. It took me some trial and error to get the homemade tool made properly. It involved a bolt, washers, and a large nut for a spacer that pushed the pulley into place.
Hope that helps. (And yes, during one instance of installing the pulley I had it out of alignment and shredded the belt).
