Default Bolts broken in block

My husband has a truck arriving g tomorrow to pick up his engine to ship it to Minnesota for remanufacture. He has the front bolts to the intake manifold broken in the block. He said they are 5/16 so they are too small to chisel out. How can he get them out without damaging the block?

Put a nut over the broken bolt and weld the bolt to the inside of the nut. Let cool for a few minutes and turn out.

I believe the rebuilder allows for this as its a common problem also I believe it broke in the head and not the block

If there is enough sticking out.... I just clean the crap away from the base of the bolt, where it goes into the head, drown it with chemicals, grab the bolt with a pair of vice grips, and wiggle it back and forth while tapping it with a hammer, till it breaks loose. Works every time.

That said, the rebuilder won't be surprised to see broken bolts. And you shouldn't re-use the stock heads in any event. The deck castings are too thin, leading to cracking around the valve seats. Replace the heads with NEW, better design castings, and it becomes a non-issue.

Welcome to DF!
