Dana 60 rear pinion ?
Hey guys I had a friggin 3 year old rear driveshaft/rear u joint going. Also had a leak from the pinion seal, finally time to fix that
. I didn't do the u joint last time, had it done when they rebuilt my tranny.
Anyway I marked all 3 with a punch(pinion, nut, yoke), and the pinion basically had no threads showing. Put it back like I thought it was. Well I get a whine on deceleration. So I tighten it up a bit. I'm now a half turn past my marks and I have thread showing. I was roughly 90 ft/lbs on a cheaper torque wrench.
Test drive(short), cant hear any whinning accel or decell, but I live in a city.
I'm going to be driving tomorrow morning about 20 miles total. I will get up to 55mph and some is country road where I can hear better.
Am I good to drive that much if its off a pinch(loose or tight), and if its too tight can I back it off and reset it?
Thanks for any help......atleast that pesky leak is fixed.

I'm not a diff guy either, but it was definitely not over tightened on the first shot. Whether or not I went too far on 2nd?????
From what I've "heard", whine on decel is loose, whine on accel is tight? I could be wrong, just going by instincts. I wrench most on this, but use you tube and boards to make it work with stuff I've never done.
Just dont wanna wreck my rear end, plow season is coming soon.

Man guys I'm a bit lost on this. As stated before my first setting was spot on my markings. Now this "whine" what does it sound like? At my original set spot, it was more like a grone on decell. Something you know isn't right. Only drove it 2 miles and knew something was not right. So I did tighten it up......I actually went 270 degree past my marks with the nut.
Everything sounded OK last night, but accelerating today I did notice a sound at 28-40 MPH....more like a AT tire hum sound on the highway. On the way home I heard more of a lite whistle sound at those speeds along with tire sound.
Now take in fact that my hearing is not so great, plus its windy as hell today. Plus my truck had a 40 flowmaster turned out before rear, now has full "direct replacement" exhaust......sound effects walker muffler and tailpipe. Its a ton quieter , but the last 3 years I could not hear stuff....all feel.
Well I backed it off bout 90 degree, and pulled the yoke back to the nut. Now it has "wheel noise" both accel and decell. None are a "whine"....kinda like big nobby ATT's howling. Everything seems to be around 30-40 mph....except decell....bit more broad.
I re-tightened it but haven't run it yet. I'm back to 60 degree of that last 90 degree, I guess that puts me at 240 degree more then my marks? Any suggestions to get it right? I think my hearing is causing a problem.....maybe I can give the wife a ride tomorrow?

Well I ran a quick big block, seems to be closer. I think Ill stick with it and just change fluid. Had what I would call a "slight whine" at 30-35" on accell. Decell was pretty good. I'm just gonna change fluid and see where its at.Hopefully I can find some purple up for it.....thought I had to use valvoline last time...thats what I had for topoff.
