Gen light... Please help

Maybe I got lucky. I got the "gen" light on my truck with 215,000 miles and the original alternator. So I swapped out the original factory 81-amp alternator for a new 120-amp alternator from Auto Zone. The case was about an inch larger in diameter, but bolted right in (ok; after we swapped out the pulley from the old to the new one). No problems since.
I would suggest while you've got the belt off (especially if it is a high-mileage truck) to swap out the old tension and idler pulley pulleys for new ones (they're not expensive). If they seize, really bad things can happen (as we found out on my buddy's 95 Jeep ZJ).

Unfortunately, that sounds like a failing voltage regulator, which, as you guessed, is in the PCM. You can install an external regulator, there are YouTube videos for just such an occasion.... and solve it that way....... I *think* there is a way to do it that the PCM will see correct charging voltage, and leave the lights off, and make the gauge work. Or, you can replace the PCM, and call it a day.
Nice to see you again.
