Default 2000 Ram 1500 Sport rearend

Hey guys,

I'm new to this site so if there is specific thread on this then I apologize, I searched but did not find what I was looking for.

Anyways, I have found a 2000 1500 QCSB Sport that has been hit on the back passenger side and it broke the end off the axle. Before I bid on this truck I went to price rearends for it and found that I can find a 2wd rearend for about $250 and a 4x4 rearend for about $600, both being 3.55s. What is different about them to make the 4x4s more expensive?

I have read that some trucks have abs and some don't. If that is the difference then would I be able to just swap my backing plates off of the old axle or is the abs built into the axle itself?

Thanks for the help.

There should only be one rear wheel speed sensor, right on the center of the pig, and it doesn't matter what year, as ALL 2nd gen trucks had at least rear wheel ABS. Some had 4wal.... luck of the draw there, but, much more likely to have 4wal on the newer trucks.

I really don't know what the difference would be between 2 and 4wd rear axles. So far as I know, there aren't any...... but, I am not 100% sure on that. Does the 4wd axle you are looking at have the Limited Slip differential?? That *might* account for some of the cost difference.

If the truck you are looking at is a 4x4, need to check and see what axle ratio it currently has, and be REAL sure the rear matches the front. (although, 3.55 IS the most common ratio.....)

If it got hit hard enough to break the axle, are you sure there isn't any frame damage?

Welcome to DF! You are indeed in the right spot.

I used the car-part search for these prices and it only asks if it is 2x4 or 4x4 and what gearing, nothing about limited slip or not. I'm not sure what gearing it has, havent gotten that far. It's a really nice looking black sport with tan leather interior and is going to be at a no reserve auction next week. I sold my 08 hemi truck and daily driving a big block truck is getting old so I am looking for something more practical. I was just pricing things it might need to see what I would be comfy bidding it at.

I'm aware of the matching gearing issue, thanks for the advice though.

According to the website the frame is straight, you can tell that it barely got hit on the side, like a small car was trying to avoid them and went under the back tire. The bed is pushed in at the taillight but the tailgate looks good and in front of the wheel isnt hurt. I'd say it just hit it just right.

Sounds like a potentially good deal then.

I am just not finding a lot of info on differences between the axles...... what's puzzling is: Track width seems to be different on the various cab/bed configurations..... And here I thought all the axles were the same......

I'm hoping it is, if it works out I'm sure I'll be on here a lot more.

I havent found any info either. I guess I could call the salvage yard and see if they have any info on it. I've got a friend of a friend with one running a 2wd rear in his 4x4 so who knows. Probably some irrelevant bracket or something that makes it different.

The only thing that I can think of (about the difference between 2 and 4 wheel) is spring perch angles and shock mount angles, maybe???

are they giving you any kind of short term warranty on the rearends? might look through it before you throw it on. I know those rearends are infamous for going bad.

I am mainly just trying to figure out the difference in them. I've found a guy with several 2wds sitting around and he said $100 a rearend if I pull it so no real warranty. If the housings are the same I am going to pull the 3.55 sure grip out of the bent axle and put it in the new one along with new bearings and everything.
