Completely lost here..
Hey guys so I've hit a dead end working on my truck. '(01 1500 Sport 4x4 off-road edition, automatic) so my issues started a while back. OBD said bad governor pressure sensor and solenoid. No biggie, dropped the pan, replaced. Good to go. Fast forward a year later.. OBD throws up another code for a bad governor pressure sensor and solenoid. Replaced again. This time it's a no go (ordered a cheap non Mopar off eBay) Replaced a 3rd time with Mopar parts and truck was back to running like a champ. Fast forward 6 months later.. on my way home from the gym and the "O/D OFF" light came on, trans temp came on, smelled a real strong burning smell and clearly no 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear. Wtf.. so we waited a little and restarted the truck. 1st gear runs no problem, truck moves like it should. Only issue.. no shifting from 1-2 as well as reverse is inexistant. I don't hear the clunk of it going into reverse anymore, the RPMs sky rocket but the truck might move an inch every time you hit 4-5k RPM's. We dropped the valve body and realized the pressure regulator was sticking, it was removed and cleaned and lubed up to ensure proper sliding. Also noticed the 1-2 was sticking, same process was done. Felt so confident we figured out the problem. Replaced all gaskets, new fluid, new lockup and overdrive solenoid, etc. Got it all reassembled and figured f*** it, let's give it a shot. Fired it up and no reverse still. No shifting out of first gear. With the truck in Drive if you get the truck up to 4,000 RPMs in first gear (it should be switching gears) if you take your foot off the gas, the truck slows down on its own, GOING DOWNHILL. If you put the truck in D1 and hit 4,000 RPMs and take your foot off the gas, the truck keeps on rolling down hill as it should. I'm so lost here.
Long story short, after quite a few repairs the truck has no reverse, and won't shift out of first gear. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks guys!

Disconnect the 8 pin connector on the drivers side of the trans. (about halfway back) That will disable the PCM from controlling the trans. Now, go for a short drive. There will be zero automatic function though, so, start in first, shift when appropriate. If the trans shifts into the gear you tell it to, when you tell it to, its still an electronic problem. If it doesn't, it's rebuild time.
Well that's worth a shot definitely. I'm not a mechanic so I'm not 100% on this lol if it were an electronic failure, would that prevent reverse and higher gears? It almost seemed like a pressure issue. In reverse, the truck will sit at real high RPM's and the truck will move ever so slightly but there is no "clunk" sound when it's put in reverse. It almost acts like it's in neutral. I'll definitely give it a shot though!
As for the accumulator, do you mean the piston? It's in alright shape, I contemplated changing it out for good measures in case it's cracked or something that I can't easily see. This might sound pretty stupid honestly but my uncle is a transmission specialist but lives about 10 states away lol so everything we tell him is based on our experiences. If he were able to actually look at the truck itself, he may find something wrong that looks normal to myself. But on a side note.. he said when he's ever done a rebuild, he leaves the accumulator piston springs out. Both of them. Is this normal/recommended?

Yeah, sorry if it seems like I have a lack of knowledge lol I'm trying to learn as I go and learn the proper pArt names to give a better description. One thing I did notice is the "2nd band strut" (I saw it referred to as that in a picture) was fairly loose. I was able to move and wiggle it by hand. Is that normal? Could the band be loose and could that cause these issues?
Loose bands can indeed cause some interesting issues, and if you find yourself in the trans pan again, it sure wouldn't hurt to make sure they were properly adjusted.

I really hope I can get this thing running once and for all. I'm going to try the PCM test method today. The biggest issue is getting the truck down the driveway because I don't have reverse! I'll see if I can get it moving and give it a shot.
Sounds like the issues I had. Burnt fluid, no 1-2 shift and no reverse. Ended up being my forward bad was completely burnt up and it ruined the direc drum it rides in. Also my direct clutches were all burnt and actually welded together. I'm going to guess that you'll need a full rebuild.
So I tried unplugging the 8 pin connector and the truck won't shift at all. It stays in first the whole time still. After speaking with my uncle he said he was gonna have us do a test to check the bands and clutch. He said put it in D and get to about 15 mph and drop down to D1 and see if the truck engine brake. It did engine brake which told him the bands are still good. He said it's time for a rebuild. The clutch is shot. Anybody have any insight as to if it's worth giving a shot or just take it to a shop?
