Default Harmonic balancer???

Gonna have to out off the water pump a little further.

Well, went to work today, noticed a slight vibration. Went to lunch, more vibration, driving home, even more vibration, and a mile from home, extreme vibration, felt like I was driving in gravel that has the washboard ripples, but only at certain rpms was it really bad, like at about 1500 or so. At idle hear a clanking noise from front of engine. The video should speak for itself, just need someone to verify what it is. (The thing clanking behind the crank pulley). I think it's the harmonic balancer but not sure.

Video:

Thanks!

Take your serpentine belt off so the tension is off all the pulleys and check everything. Check and see if there is play when you wiggle the pulleys or the harmonic balancer

99% sure it's the balancer then. It was moving basically 1-2 inches back and bad forth. Never seen one fail this bad, hope my timing cover isn't screwed up. I'll see what I can do tomorrow. How hard is it to get those off normally? I have the 3 bolt puller, or the 3 jaw as well.

That video sure makes it appear that you have a bad balancer. It's not uncommon for the rubber to deteriorate that sits in between the balancer hub and the outer ring, which creates the situation you see in the video. Looks like the outer hub is spinning and moving in and out on the hub, which will throw the engine out of balance.

Do not drive that vehicle. Replace that balancer quick with either a stock replacement or an SFI approved replacement (that won't come apart like the stock unit, such as the PowerForce 90012 - http://professional-products.com/har...-dampers/mopar).

If that's a 5.9, you can get a balancer over the counter at any store. If 5.2, only through dealer. Quite a pain to remove and install. Yes pullers are required as well as a capable helper.

Yes it is a 5.9. I got it off and installed the new balancer, but what's the torque on the crank bolt that holds the balancer on? The one that 1-1/4"?

Tight. About 2 grunts. I usually snug it up, then smack the wrench with a hammer a couple times... Or, use an impact wrench to put it on.....

I took it to the max on my torque wrench, 150ft lbs. I'm guessing that's tight?
Cause it sure felt like it!

Also, I have the water pump and thermostat just in case I needed to do pull the radiator, but I didn't have to.

BUT. How hard is it to replace the pump? I know you gotta remove the alternator and compressor, and then their respective bracket. That isn't the hard part in my opinion, but I have 5 gallons of peak global, it will mix with the green stuff that in it currently, but I'd rather not mix peak global 50/50 with the green stuff. I want to remove most of the coolant from the block and heater as possible, but without the use of a garden hose, as it is like 10 degrees, and without removing the freeze plugs.

I can't run out to get the green stuff either because Nebraska currently is collecting ice, sooo.

Nvm on my previous post. I just decided to put it back together, need it for tomorrow anyway. I'll do the water pump another day.

But for your viewing pleasure, here are some picturesque of the repair.
The new Harmonic balancer is a all in one piece, the pulley and balancer are together, when the OEM balancer is 2 piece pulley and balancer. I had rented the Chrysler harmonic balancer puller and had my three jaw, good thing because the thee jaw saved the day again. No holes for the Chrysler tool jaws to fit into. Came off easy, just used a ratchet with the puller. No crazy breaker bar stories(if you want I can tell you about the time I had to replace the pitman arm on my Chevy, bout took out my kneecap.)
