Default 2000 ram 3500 with v10 transmission problems

2000 RAM 3500 WITH V10 TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS

I have 54000 miles on my truck . When driving at steady speed in high gear the trans will "skip" every several seconds . It goes into neutral for a fraction of a second at which point the rpms increase slightly then it will solidly re-ingage causing a slight jerking type feeling . It does this whether the overdrive is on or off making me think it is not an overdrive problem and more of a third gear problem.

The trans shifts normally through the gears but it feels like it shifts just a little to softly for a truck but in no way does it feel like it is slipping excessively and engaging overly slow like it is nearly worn out.

Also, what type of trans is this?

Thanks for any help

Likely a 48RE. I think, might be a 47, but, in a 2000 3500, I would suspect the 48.... You can get a build sheet for your truck from dodge, and that will tell you for sure.

How's the fluid level? Are you getting any codes? Any other odd behavior? It *might* be just an electrical problem..... if you are lucky.

Changed the fluid and filter lately? May not hurt to drop the pan, and have a look.

Could be the torque converter lockup solenoid going. That would cause the converter to lock and unlock and create a jerking feeling. Will do it weather you have o/d on or off.

why would it do it with the overdrive off since there is no power going to it then?

have you experienced this type of prob before and fixed it?

where is it?

how do i replace it?

The same solenoid controls both overdrive and torque converter lockup. One function can fail while the other continues working. I haven't personally experienced this problem but this is where I would begin looking. With less than 55k on the trans I doubt it's a mechanical problem.

The solenoid is inside the transmission. You have to drop the valve body enough to remove the plug since a new solenoid will include the harness and plug that goes to the outside of the trans case. While in there maybe consider changing the governor pressure solenoid also since they do have fairly high failure rates. Be sure to get good quality solenoids. Either Mopar or Borg Warner have been good for me.

It will lock up with the OD off. It just won't go into OD.
