5.9 Magnum Complete rebuild Timing
I know this has been beaten worse than any horse ever has, I have done alot of searches on it and have read numerous posts. I still feel unclear. I had my engine rebuilt. I did not do the build due to being called to military service. I have since returned and would like to install the motor. I am skeptical on the build since I found out the guy is not a big mopar builder. (should have done better homework). My issue is the timing. I am reading all different things on this. I am looking to see if Im right in my understanding, someone please correct me if I am wrong. Here goes: If the #1 Piston is at TDC on the compression stroke and the balancer is reading TDC with the cut line then the cam timing is correct. From here the intermediate shaft gets installed with the slot towards the number 1 intake bolt (approx 11:00). The distributor is then installed and adjusted to line rotor up with the mark in the cam sensor plate. This should get me going. Then I can get to a dealer to set fuel sync. Is this right?
Thanks

Thanks, for the replies. My issue is getting everything lined up. I just want to make sure I am clear as far as The intermediate shaft and distributor. Im have all kinds of issues now with my motor. I got yanked with the military so I gave it to a builder that deals with all the race cars around here. Only thing is he is not a big Mopar guy let alone know about magnums. (I had no idea). I had to have him repull the intake cause he didnt put the lifters in right, and now I pulled the valve covers and it seems that my valve train geometry is off. The rockers are contacting the valve too close to the intake side. They are Hughes rockers so im sure they need shims but you think someone who builds engines would see this. Also I know he did not use new bolts after pulling the intake. They are TTY so I have to replace and retorque them as well im sure. Thanks again

Yes, you got it right. The slot gets pointed at 11 oclock ish. With all marks at TDC Cam and crank round dots both at 12 oclock for cly 1 TDC. Insert distributor then turn distributor until rotor points at Number 1 cly notch. The set fuel sync with scanner to fine tune allignment. Engine must be warmed b4 setting sync.

Adjustable, non adjustable?
Stud mount or their shaft mount conversion?
Don't sweat the intake bolts, just toss em out and go to Home Depot.

thanks for the replies. I have the timing down. Thanks for the pics. As far as the rockers go, I started poking around a bit and found a few misaligned stands that were crushed from not being indexed properly. Im ready to kill the builder. Ive already pulled the intake and have new bolts. I called hughes and ordered some new stands. What a mess. Im going to wait till the stands come and since everthing is off already, im going to check it all.

Nice I know. I already have the top end apart so I might as well dig in and check everything out. Going to pull the oil pan and peek in there also. At the same time I have been kicking myself for not getting the heads with the bigger valves (2.02) so i am going to take these off and put them up for sale. I cant list them here for some reason but i have them on dodge talk. I am going to order the bigger heads and spring kit and get everything together myself. I hate to eat money but I dont want to ever do this again so I want it done right and the way I want this time. Here's a pic or 2 of where im at now. Guess its back to the board. Thanks again for all the help and replies.
