Default Transfer case bad?

I have a 97 2500 (rust bucket but runs good). I'm not sure if the transfer case is bad or if it could be something else. When I pull on the four wheel drive stick I have to pull really hard just to get into four high. Sometimes it won't work no matter how hard I pull or if I do get to engage it pops out after a bit more so in reverse. If I disconnect the linkage the shifter work fine so I know it's not that. That is telling me that it has to be something with the case it self. Is there something that I missed or could do other than replace the case? Not sure how often the 4 wheel drive was used before i bought it. I bought it cheap do to begin rusty with gas and break lines leaking. If I need to replace case what transfer cases will work. I have the 241dhd in it now. But if I can put something else in it to save money I would. I don't plow snow or anything like that. I just need four wheel drive to work to get around the lakes. Any advice would be much appreciated

Check fluid level in the t-case.

How many miles on it?

Check for slop in the shifter, make sure it actually puts the shifter on the t-case into the 'notch'.

With that mileage, it might simply be time for a rebuild. Which, as I understand it, really isn't that bad of a job. (provided you have a warm place to work.)

I don't think there slop in the shifter. It is looking like i have to replace, repair, or rebuild the case it self. Since i don't know anything about the in sides of the case it might be best to swap it out. I have access to a 1999 1500 case. That i can get for little to nothing. Will it bolt up and work? I know it won't be a strong as the one that i have there now but i don't need to be.

Nope. Won't work. Shift pattern is different, and no provision for Vehicle Speed Sensor that your truck requires. You need one from a 94-97 truck.

Nope, you need one to match yours, otherwise, you will run into problems.

There is a round tag on the back side of the t-case, probably says something like "NV231D" Or possibly dhd.... see what ya got, look for one that is the same.

That kinda sucks limits the chace of finding one cheap. My tag says 241 DHD. If you look up dodge ram transfer case specs there is a 241, 241d, and a 241hd, but there is no 241 dhd. I think it is just a 241 hd. I'm i wrong? Is there an odd ball out there and I have it?

Is your truck a 3/4 ton???? I didn't think the 241 case came in 1500's????? Or did I miss something somewhere?

The NV241DHD simply indicates that is a 241 t-case, heavy duty, for dodge. 241C is for chevy, etc.

I have been looking for one as well, and they appear to be rarer than hen's teeth.... I can find rebuilt units, for around a grand, but, I REALLY don't want to spend that much on my truck I paid 2500 bucks for.......
