Default Low Oil Pressure reading

Greetings,
I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with 360 magnum engine. Engine has roughly 140,00 miles on it.

Recently had a problem with oil pressure. Running around town, oil pressure is roughly 40 psi on the dash gauge. Took the truck out of town (up to highway speed 60mph). Happened to look at the oil pressure gauge, and noticed that the oil pressure was down to the first white mark on the guage (10psi?). It was fluctuating as I drove. There was NO abnormal sound from engine, the temperature was normal and no abnormal smells.
When I pulled into town, the pressure gauge dropped to zero and dash light came on. A little throttle rap and the oil pressure came back up to first white mark. Again, nothing abnormal.

I have no oil leaks and it has the proper amount of oil in it.

Started it up the next day and it had 40 psi as I drove it around town.

Any ideas on what is up ?

Replace the oil pressure sensor. They are notorious for that kind of behavior. It is one of their favorite failure modes.
