Were they 9.25's? Not doubting your expertise I am just speaking from what I encountered. Whether I was using the old or new bearings in pinion depth trials I had to whack that pinion shift out hard with a sledge each time to press off the front (yoke side) bearing. Made sense to me that they were pressed on, I wouldn't want the inner race spinning relative to the shaft. Experienced the same with the D44.

RJ: I would replace both if you are in that far, cups and cones. The manual also gives a rotating torque for new bearings and a different one for used bearings, so throwing both into the mix would probably not be ideal. BTW you will need the threaded adjuster wrench for working on this axle, if you don't already have it.
