Default Rough spot in steering gear, can I rebuild it myself?

It's about the '99 in my signature. The steering has been getting looser and looser. Yesterday, I noticed a slight "bind" in the wheel, slightly right of center. Nothing overwhelming, and I can easily steer past it, but it is disconcerting. The two main problems are that the original gear did something like this a while before it locked up completely. The second thing is this is a hydraulic assist system. Replacement gears are expensive, and the maker, AGR, wants to charge me $350 for rebuilding mine. I'm wondering if I can get a rebuild kit and just overhaul it myself? Thanks!!

For just a bit more, (like, 16 bucks....) you could get a redhead box, and call it a day.

More or less what I thought, except I need mine tapped for hydro assist as well. But if I can rebuild mine for $50 and save the cash......
