Default Sputtering? Up hill loses speed can barely accelerate

Hi all , new to the forum, I have a 1995 b2500 conversion van with the small v8, drive from iowa to California with it 261k miles... Recently it started doing wood things like when going up hill (mountains)at about 70 everything's great, then I notice I'm losing speed so I use the pedal instead of cruise, well now if I push it to the floor it sputters the pedal goes down but the engine feels almost like it flooded, I can find a position that allows me to barely hold about 50mph ...thought fuel filter first as it seemed to go away with a fill up, but after this happening about 4 times that no longer helps. One day it did this again heard a small clunk from center front under body when I was trying to accelerate as it was doing this, stopped, removed battery cable for 20 min, made it home with no overdrive and ever since if I drive on flat city streets it does just fine but there still seems to be no overdrive and a strange almost turbine like sounds when accelerating, power steering recently started going but don't think the sound is that.
Thank you all in advance for any advice or help!!

-Scott

Fixed the plenum yet? How old are the O2 sensors? Last time you gave it a tune up? Still have a cat converter under there?

Welcome to DF!

What he said...

Then, maybe, start looking at the fuel pump assembly (which is in the gas tank).

Bought it for $800 drive it here, fluid levels ate good, Tammy may be a bit over full, replaced front left outer wheel bearing, there seems to be some electrical issues, lights etc.. Sometimes the OD button works it doesn't at all now, old clean trans is not burnt it's very quiet I assume there's a cat under there.

Would the no overdrive and loss of acceleration be a transmission issue at all? Don't want to make anything worse if it is.

Thanks! I assume they are all factory but I see some harnesses that don't have anywhere to go lol and at some point a kid installed a CD changer. Only thing I noticed when I bought it was a lot of fuses laying around the interior

Plenum??

Forgot to mention that when this happens I eventually can't get ascension the pedal just makes it want to die and I have to pull over and wait restart a few times to feel like I did something and hope it gets where I'm going ha!

Clogged cat. Probably blown plenum. (read the stickied thread at the top of this forum.) Are you going to try and register it in California?

Checked the engine codes...duh... I get codes 45 and 37 one for trans solenoid and other torque converter...

#37. Torque converter clutch solenoid ckt or trans temp sensor to high or low
Open or short in ckt wiring or connectors, voltage out of range at trans temp sensor input.

#45. Transmission OD solenoid circuit
Transmission OD solenoid circuit failure, open or short in the transmission OD solenoid circuit

.

It's interesting because on the 1600 mile trip the only time it happened before we got here was on a warm day 12 hours driving and then we had a hearheat wave in san Jose and it's way worse now...

Is there any way to check the external stuffs first without ripping everything apart? And will driving it hurt the trans or anything further?
