Well, I know the service manual says you need a spanner wrench and a 36mm wrench. It mentions the Snap On part number. I assume the 36mm wrench is the size for gas motors as well as it does mention the Cummins. Is this correct? What brand wrench do you guys use? I'm debating on just getting a cheap $15 one on Amazon, or even a Sunex or something mid priced although I'm not sure which will fit in there and what won't. I'm not too keen on the idea of spending $100+ on the Snap On. My mechanic is trying to talk me into the Lisle set for an air hammer, but I'm also not crazy about spending $120 for a whole set when I've made it the past 10 years without needing these.

Is the spanner wrench really needed? My buddy that does this for a living is telling me that it's not needed and that he has never used one. However, it seems like it could make the job a lot easier. Has anyone used the Lisle 44180? It looks like it may work well for about a quarter of the price of the Mopar wrench. Or do these not work well?

What all do you guys use to take them off?

 

I use a large adjustable and a BFH.

I used an adjustable wrench, and just whacked it with a hammer a couple times to break it loose. Then is just unthreads, and off it comes. Leave the belt on to hold the pulley in place.

 

Pain in butt without the right tool. Tried the hammer, belt on, and Dad holding it below to finally get it loose. I had gone to every shop and looked online but noone carries a "spanner" wrench. Then one day I was in Oreillys getting something else and there it was on the shelf! It has the nipples to fit the holes and attaches to my 1/2 ratchet. Wow, does that make life easier.

 

I rented the fan clutch wrench tool from Autozone. Worked for me.

I think it's 35 or 36mm.

 

I use a big Crescent wrench on mine also.

If you have some soft rubber and a ratchet strap then you can do this


If you have a welder and some flat bar and dowel rod or a couple bolts laying around then you can make a spanner wrench that will fit your water pump

 

Must be a regional thing. I went to Autozone, Advance Auto, Napa, and Oreilly's and their "universal kit" didn't work at all. Needed the nips to hold the pulley. Then one day it was hanging on the rack. I was so elated that the counter girl thought I was high.
