99 Dodge ram start but when under load backfires and runs like crap
I had a ton of issues after putting new engine/sensors/hoses/AC & heater core in my truck. I gave up after months of chasing dead ends and replacing stuff to no avail. Limped it to a shop to let them fool with it.
Turned out the coil, which was replaced a year ago, was bad. Runs great now.
Check your spark. Shop said he was amazed my truck drove at all, it barely had any spark at all.

did the OP ever fix their problem? For a backup emergency I'm seriously planning on keeping a spare coil in the glovebox, not sure if brand matters or not? I also read in another topic here the MAP sensor hardens after all these years and can make the trucks run bad and get bad mpg. I knew where the crank sensor is, had to look up where the cam sensor is, it's apparently inside the dist. and sometimes called the sync sensor or distributer pick up.....I even saw it called the reluctor... In the event of those going out I'd prob just call the tow truck then work on those parts at home rather than in a cussing storm rage on the side of the road lolol
my coil seems to work fine, it just looks old and dirty, when I read before about possibly changing it out as part of a tuneup for my 01, people said either the coil will work or it won't, there's no inbetween, is that true? If not, a new good coil would probably make the truck have some new life in it with more pep...
for example, this one is only like 8 bucks brand new for my truck on rock auto http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....5645&jsn=10549
there's a "premium" one for 18 bucks http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....5645&jsn=10555

Coils have some odd failure modes as well. It's entirely possible for it to work just fine, until it gets hot, then it can start breaking down intermittently, or stop working completely.......
