V10 high idle
Hey guys new here to the forum and owning a Dodge. So I just picked up a 1996 ram 2500 V10 . Was told it was running hot and needed a battery and headers because they were cracked. Long story short I replaced the radiator, temp sensor because it was broken, plugs and wires, valve cover gaskets, air filter and put Mopar headers in it that came with the truck. And the truck also has a jet performance chip in it. I went to start it up tonight and it fired up and right away went to idle super high. It was like 1350rpm. After about 5 minutes of running the headers began to glow red so I shut it down. Now I don't have any codes I'm thinking because of the chip but any thoughts out there on this? Thanks
Was it running hot on the temp gauge? You should be using a 195 degree thermostat. Headers do run very hot and increase the underhood temperature quite a bit. When looking at them after dark with the engine running the heat really shows and will appear red. Hope that excess heat won't fry the spark plug wires.
I agree, dump that chip. It's not helping you.
The high idle could be caused by a bad throttle position sensor or idle air control motor on the throttle body. Mine had both bad and didn't throw a code.

I removed the chip after I saw it running like that and it didn't make a difference. There's no codes now but Im going to drive it a bit to see if one comes on. But I have seen the iat or iac cause this.
I drove it yesterday and it died at the end of my road. And the check engine light came on for p1296 no 5vs to map sensor. I replaced the sensor and it made no difference in running. Any thoughts?
I'd try looking for a possible vacuum leak somewhere. High idle means that unmetered air is getting into the system and the EFI compensates by adding fuel driving the idle up.
