Default 99 transfer case issues

I recently purchased a 99 Dodge 2500 5.9 cummins with a 5 speed. The transmission and transfer case were exploded so we rebuilt the transmission and bought a used transfer case. Both transfer cases are 241 DLD but the shift patterns are different. The original shifter has the pattern 4L N 2H 4H starting at the floor and going toward the seat. The used case that we bought has a different shift pattern. It appears that it is reversed from the one that came out of the truck. Also the shift tab that was on the used one is approx. 2 inches shorter and the slot is perfectly in line with the tab. The original is about 4 inches in length and the slot is slightly angled from being in line with the tab. One other difference is that the original had no speed sensor in the tailshaft housing and the used one does. Anyone have ideas?

They changed from 97 to 98. You got a 97 or earlier t-case. You don't need the VSS on the tailshaft, so that isn't really an issue, but, as you noticed, the shifters, and pattern, are different. Original shifter mounted to the trans, but, it's likely that your trans doesn't have the provisions for that... So, easiest would be to trade it for a 98 or later t-case.
