Going To Grab A Spare 360 To Swap Into 01 Ram. What To Look For?
Hey guys,
My 01 Ram Off Road with the 5.9 Magnum is at about 150,000 miles and has several issues. I suspect a blown plenum, as well as a slightly blown head gasket. It also drinks quite a lot of oil, and pings under moderate or hard acceleration (even on 91 oct). I have invested fairly heavily in this truck over the last few years including a reman 46re and a big trans cooler to keep it cool plus a gauge and external filter setup. I've also re-done the entire front end with Moog parts, put a new set of Cooper AT3's on it a couple years back, sprayed in a bedliner, wired in a remote start system, and done a bunch of other little fixes or upgrades. I don't see myself parting with this truck for a long time, so instead of doing the minimum (pulling intake and heads, slapping on new gaskets, and going on my way. I think I would like to take a different route.
I'd like to do a mild performance rebuild, but since I don't want the truck off the road for many weeks while I do the work on the weekends, I am thinking of picking up a spare engine, building it, and then swapping it over a weekend.
In terms of application, is there anything I need to know? I know the best thing would be to just grab another out of an 01, but if I can't find that, will an OBD2 5.9 magnum drop in without issue? I assume it doesn't matter if it's out of a van/durango/dakota or ram.
Thanks.

Actually, you can use ANY 5.9 magnum engine... 93-02. The only differences are some variations on the intake manifold. (one or two temp sensors, egr or not, center divider, or not.... etc.) So, get a motor, build it how you want it, then just transfer the intake from your current motor, to the new one, on install day.
I would have a chat with Hemifever about a custom tune for the new motor as well.

Might fix the plenum and source the coolant leak first. 150k is nothing for the magnums- many go over 200k or more easily.
New plenum and tune-up with a seafoam treatment may be all you need. No more oil guzzling or pinging (unless its tuned).
I'm at 225k and been going strong every day.
