No, we didn’t want to screw with the timing so just replaced the sensor.

Besides, the ring gear just needs to contact the starter gears. That's it. What's a tone ring?
Tone ring for the crank sensor.. the crank sensor is in back of the engine on the tranny.

Thanks! I’ll check that out... already resigned to the fact we may have to pull it back out. Unfortunately.

I looked at the 95 service manual. The V6 has it's own flywheel. It said nothing about where it's positioned. The crank sensor seems used for RPM not position. I would think there would be a locating dowel if it mattered.

That was my thought also.. without one would the position really matter. Kind of trying a process of elimination.

Maybe you disturbed a ground wire or left one unhooked. What brand sensors did you buy? Some are very cheap and don't work.

On both sensors we opted for the more expensive versions.. I was pondering grounds but would think as much spark as it’s getting, and it’s really trying hard to start, that the grounds were ok. Maybe?

Oh, and it was throwing a code P0340 before we replaced the crank sensor. When replaced the code went away.

FYI the timing is controlled by the computer (PCM) and not adjustable. The cam sensor in the distributor controls fuel sync ( timing of the fuel injectors. Turning the distributor changes the fuel sync. You need a fairly high end scanner to read the fuel sync so it can be set properly.

You may want to reset the PCM. I can't remember if you just unhook the battery for awhile or unhook the positive cable and hold it against the frame for 30 seconds while leaving the ground connected. Hopefully one of the others remembers. Sometimes it won't reconize the new sensors until it gets reset.

Hey You is much better with the codes and electronics on these engines. Hopefully he can steer you in the right direction. Maybe check your fuses and relays. Check for fuel pressure? Can you hear the pump run?
