Transmission check valve
So I have a 2000 Dodge ram 1500 318 4x4. My overdrive kicks out then the trans temp light comes on. So i was wondering what parts does it take to do the check valve delete?
There are a selection of DIY threads in the ...... FAQ/DIY section here. Cheapest way is to remove the hose with the check valve, drill out the valve, clean the line REALLY well, and reinstall it. I just removed the line, and replaced it with a section of rubber trans hose, and four clamps. I think that was less than 5 bucks.....
Its wise to check the entire cooling circuit, the cooler in the radiator (and the factory external cooler if you have one) could be clogged. You can remove the two connections from the trans and blow air through the front one and see if you have good flow out of the rear one. If you blow air the other way, the check valve will close and you won't get flow. If there is a flow problem, then pull the check valve hose from the rad and re-test by pushing air into the rad connection. Most people are removing the check valve and plumbing in an aftermarket designed cooler that doesn't have any neck-down in the line, as preventative maintenance.
Alright, my problem: water temp starts to rise to just below and above 210 deg, after that the OD kicks off ( as indicated by dummy light on dash)This running 60 -65 and when towing 500 to 1000 lbs. Then I'm on the beach with properly deflated tires ( 18 psi) and water temp climbed halfway to the limit, this started to push fluid out of the make up tank after stopping to let it cool. Coming back after it had cooled, it did the same thing water temp went up and OD kicks off. Then after awhile the OD light goes out and the water temp is below 210 deg. Factory thermostat at 195. The transmission over heat light has never come on the dash. I've read while researching this that some say by removing the check valve all together, that the torque converter would drain fluid. My dilemma is I want to try and replace the check valve but can't freaking find one. does anyone know if there is a replacement line with the check valve in it. I'm mean damn it's only a 8 to 12 " length of hose. Thank you very much for any help.

That said, just get rid of the check valve. Yes, the t/c will drain if the truck sits long enough, but, only drawback to that is delayed engagement on the first start of the day. (a couple seconds, that's it.) Install the sonax sure cure, and even that problem goes away. (Sure cure allows the pump to charge the t/c in park. Stock, it doesn't.)
PCM will disable O/D before the trans temp light comes on. That behavior is pretty normal.
Need to find out why the engine is overheating....... How old is your water pump? Radiator? Is the cooling system full? Any leaks? Anyone ever used stop-leak in the system?
