Thanks for the reply
The governor solenoid is an AIRTEX/WELLS 2N1202 from Rock Auto. Unfortunately for me I didn't replace the governor pressure sensor when I had it apart. I guess I'll order a new pressure sensor and cleanup the valve body before I go and replace the trans. The strange thing is, with the 8 pin connected, when I shift from 2 to 1 while moving there is a very distinct downshift. Maybe a band or clutch is dragging due to the potentially dirty valve body?

Oh. Well, that might be part of the problem..... AirTex has a horrible reputation......

You could *try* installing the borg warner HD governor solenoid, along with their pressure sensor, you can get 'em for around 100 bucks off EBay. (numerous sellers....) Just make sure you get them for the correct year trans.

Clean the valve body while you are in there. If that doesn't change it's behavior, it's rebuild time.......

Well thanks for the info, not what I was hoping to hear, but at least I have something to try. I'll definitely update you when I get it figured out.

Listed under the heading of...since I've tried everything else...I used to repair Dodge trannys back when Dodge was built in the USofA...727/904...I know, I know, different tech. Anyhow, many times I discovered that tranny rebuild problems were caused by improperly sized torque converters for the engine size AND it almost sounds like the wrong stall torque converter. If the stall speed of the TC is too low, the tranny engages before the proper design of the pony power curve. Thus the good engine power on the hiway. What's you RPM's on the hiway n at what speed? You just bought the pickup, maybe rebuilt tranny or new diff gearing?

FIXED!!!
Update: I tore down the entire transmission looking for problems. Found none. Reassembled it. Bought a new torque converter, threw it all back together and it works great!! Lots of power to spin the wheels and shove you in the seat when you punch the pedal. My best guess is the one way clutch on the stator inside the torque converter was bad, not giving it toque multiplication when stopped or low speeds.
Thanks for the suggestions, now I can put this issue to bed.
