2nd Gen Ram Tech1994-2001 Rams: This section is for TECHNICAL discussions only, that involve the 1994 through 2001 Rams. For any non-tech discussions, please direct your attention to the "General discussion/NON-tech" sub sections.
A couple years back, I inherited my late dad's 99 Ram 1500 CC. It had a lot of problems with it, many common to this class of truck, many of which I've conquered, with the help of this forum - so thanks for your help so far.
Yesterday, I decided to conquer the mysterious lack of chimes typically associated with the CTM. Looking underneath the dash, I found that the green connector to the CTM (base model) was disconnected. When I reconnected it, the CTM began to chime rapidly, with no lights on and no key inserted. I pulled the CTM out again and started poking around some more.
Here's where it gets really weird:
I located the key-in ignition connector on the ignition module. Per the service manual, I should have found a tan wire in cavity 1 (which I did) and a light blue wire in cavity 2. Cavities 3 and 4 should have been empty. Instead, I found the tan wire in place, and TWO ADDITIONAL WIRES in cavities 3 and 4. One wire was pink, and the other wire was yellow with red tracer (YL/RD in the tech manual).
A bit more sleuthing through the service manual helped me narrow down what these wires might be:
YL/RD: Speed Control Supply. Wiring diagrams show a YL/RD from Connector 130 to the brake lamp switch, which then feeds a signal to the speed control servo.
Pink (PK): Circuit K30. Wiring diagram shows a pink wire from PCM via Connector 2 to the Transmission Control Relay.
Here's where I'm getting really hung up:
- On the YL/RD, Cruise Control drops out just fine when I hit the brake.
- On the PK, one would think that if this wire connecting the PCM to the Transmission Control Module via the Transmission Control Relay was missing, that my transmission would be behaving squirrely, but it's not. (Side note: I did just rebuild the transmission valve body and install a TransGo shift kit. Prompted by a failed governor solenoid).
And lastly, I found this:
What I think happened: My dad was trying to install aftermarket fog lights, and this light blue wire is where he tried to tap into the wiring? The other end of the grey wire is exposed and disconnected.
ALL THIS TO SAY:
Here's what I think I'm gonna do, but I would like any additional thoughts and advice. I'm going to disconnect the PK and the YL/RD from the Key-In Ignition connector. I'm going to reconnect the grey wire into cavity 2 of the same connector, and then plug in the green CTM connector.
If that works, I think I'll trace down what the deal is with these other wires. You can see that they looked pretty slagged out, so clearly something happened in the past.
Again, any advice or words of caution would be much appreciated.
I decided to validate the pin out diagram in the service manual against what is physically present on the green connector. Pin 1 is the tan wire at the top right hand of the connector.
Hey...at pin 13, there's that pesky YL/RD wire again! Continuity check proved it was the same wire. But the service manual told me it wasn't supposed to be there...
Until I realized that I was using the wrong service manual (2001). I pulled the 98-99 service manual off this site, and did a bit of digging. Lo and behold - 4 wires listed.
Pin 1: Tan: Left Door Ajar Switch Sense
Pin 2: Light Blue: Key-In Ignition Switch Sense
Pin 3: Pink: B+ (fused) That explains a lot
Pin 4: Yellow/Red: Halo Lamp Driver
So...turns out they are supposed to be there after all. Need to make some wiring repairs, but I think that if I re-establish continuity in the Light Blue wire to the Key-In Ignition, it might get me where I want to go. We'll see...
