Yeah if you can wait till you take everything else apart that would be the better time to change the T-Stat. Mine was a pain in the A$$, had to remove the A/C compressor, and altenator just to get the dang housing off. Yes that tab is a pain, very much recomend cutting it off when you change it out.

Good luck and stay warm!!!

Yeah ive heard if you stick a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator...That will help keep your engine running hot.

I would be willing to bet that your t-stat went bad on ya. If you do replace it absolutely replace the coolant cause I'd also bet it is original and not up to the protection level you need with your cold weather. I only use the DexCool stuff, more expensive but it is silicate free and phosphorus free which is much less evil on internals of todays radiators. If ya stay with the cardboard (must be something else wrong if need that) use a few zip ties stuck thru it and thru the fins of the rad to keep it in place.
DO NOT use DEXCOOL it is of the devil. Working in a rad shop I have seen on many occasions where the DEXCOOL turns into acid and rusts the block out, after that the rust will always be a reoccuring problem. Also todays radiators are Aluminum with plastic tanks so corrosion is pretty much nonexistant.

under your name... you got a banner saying tech certified.. ive seen amandas name have that too... anyway... heating problem came back... but this time i can narow the symptoms down better... the air thast blowing pretty much gets cooler when i slow down to a stop .. after i step on it and start going again the heat will blow nice and warm... pretty much co-insides with the rpm.. thats after the rad. flush. ive checked the coolant leve and seems fine... any ideas? fearin itll be the t-stat. or maybe the water pump? the coolant temp gauge will also rise when im cruising then lower when i stop and it idles down.

huh, never noticed that. I wonder how long that's been there...

sounds like you have air in your system. or your pump is getting weak (not sure how since it's a metal impeller). you can swap out the t-stat pretty easily, if you do make sure you drill a small hole in the valve to prevent any airlock when you fill it up... and use a dodge gasket. no seant required, just put the gasket on and bolt it up. the sealant is in the gasket.

t-stat is a stocker

Change your t-stat. Mine was acting the same way, didnt have any problems till it got cold, so I emailed the guy I bought the truck from and he told me he never changed it(still the original from 1997). I went ahead and got everything and when I pulled the housing off the t-stat came out in 3 pieces, it had totally rotted apart. And the antifreeze was like mud. Talk about someone not servicing their car. Put a new 180 in it, and freash antifreeze(Im good to -40 degrees), now warms up just liek it should and no problems.

So if your is still the original change it.

And yes when it gets to cold out, I use card board also, helps protect the radiator from the direct cold air.
Sounds to me like you aren't so good at maintenance yourself. The fluids are the first thing that should be checked/flushed when acquiring a used vehicle.

well... i "acquired" this vehicle over a year ago...and all the fluids were checked... coolant was fine.. when i was active duty in the corps and stationed down south where the coldest day would be about 50 deg. this is the first winter the truck has ever seen.. it doesnt even know was salt is... expect the stuff i spill in the cab when eating mcdonalds.. and i kina resent your assumption that i dont know my maintence... and you know what happens when you assume? you make an a$$ out of U and Me
