96 v10
Ok. I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 v10. I love this truck. LOTS of torque. Anyways. I can race and it will be fine as long as I have my foot in it. I can get up to 120 no problem but as soon as I let off and I go to get back on it again just to cruise it starts backfiring real bad and I have no clue what it is. I replaced the injectors before that started happening and cleaned my tank and fuel sytem. It also does it if I am on the highway running 70ish at 3100 rpm (no overdrive) I know it's not good for it but I still do it I can turn key off not even long enough to kill truck just long enough to reset computer I guess turn it back on. I'm talking like split second I don't have to crank it back up and it'll take off fine for about another mile or so then start backfiring again. I did a compression test a long time ago. Cylinder 2&4 were dead. Replaced head gasket fixed that. Also, back to the no overdrive thing. I just rebuilt my transmission!!!! My overdrive should not be out. Could it be the push button itself? Because I can press it at 2500 rpm and tc unlocks and goes to 2700rpm. I'm stumped on a few things. Never had any lights or codes pull up since I've had it. Sorry for making you read so much any help would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Something is getting hot, and failing. One would think that the PCM would notice that, and set a code or three... since it doesn't....... I would suspect the pcm.... Problem is, there are way to many other parts in the system that can cause the same symptoms. You need a good scanner, that can do some data logging, so you can see what is actually happening when the condition presents itself.
how old are your plugs, wires and coil packs? do you have an exhaust leak up at you exhaust manifold where the pipe mates up to it? i had an exhaust leak going on there with my v10, and didnt realize it (because it happened so gradually) till i put my hand down by it and felt for it. for some reason the v10 doesnt make the obvious leak sound like a v8 does (at least in my experience). I'm kinda taking a stab at this, but if your ignition system is weak and you have an exhaust leak going on, you might be sending unburnt fuel into the exhaust where it could be igniting. if your coil packs are old/original, i would pull them off and test them.
Everything on this truck is brand new from the block up. Brand new headers no leaks new coil packs wires plugs air filter injectors power steering lower and upper intake everything is new. Like the first response said I think something is getting hot. I think the injectors are but it doesn't make sense since I can turn truck off for split second and it'll be fine.
