Default sudden 46 re problem fluid level went high

Short story, Fluid level suddenly way too high and truck not drivable.

About a week ago 20 degrees day or so if that matters. Driving along on highway and trans suddenly pops out of OD about 15 miles from home. Tried hitting the OD button to see if it was faulting. Made it about 10 more miles and the trans is making excessive noise and barely engaging properly. Came to a stop at light and it would not go for about 5 minutes as I was calling for help. Suddenly it dropped (more like banged) into gear and I was able to drive it into the nearest parking lot. With engine still on shifted through the gears (it wanted to go in reverse but not forward) checked the fluid level and it was really high by a few quarts I would say and there was an oily mist coming upwards from the trans area. Checked it a few more times to be sure. Shut off and got picked up. Came back 2 hours later with intent to tow. This time it would not go in reverse so we pushed it back then it went in forward so I drove it 2 mile back home. Would not go in reverse either. No warning lights. No leaks from underneath. No safe mode. Checked fluid twice last summer and fall as it was low and throwing codes after which I tightened the pan and repaired the stripped bolts adding two quarts on separate occasions. Previous owner had the trans rebuilt by a friend I was told.

Am I SOL or can I fix it with out pulling transmission?

Almost sounds like the 2 quarts you've been putting in there helped but has now been backed up by something. I would check back flow valve as they tend to cause tranny issues like getting to hot and burning them selves alive, hence the mist you may have seen from somewhere.

Also are you checking it hot, ran through all gears for 30 seconds, in nuetral, e brak on ? You could possibly get a false reading if it's in park.

Could be a rebuild gone bad, something not in spec anymore, burnt fluid... a pan drop might tell you more. Or a scanner that can read your transmission sensors and pressures.
Might also try to disconnect the 8pin (I think) connector on the transmission and see if it will drive with you manually switching gears..

THIS! (starving for fluid) Do a pressure test it will confirm if this is this is the issue or not. If you dont have a gauge you can get one from harbor freight for about $10.

so far accumulator is low at 30-40 psi in forward gears

front servo reading 0 in reverse but is going into reverse this is the most striking finding.

rear servo reading 140 in reverse and 40 in 1st gear

So overall it is low by about 10 psi at 30 ish outside temp.

I should add when I went to drive it into a working area it would go forward but not backward so we towed it backwards then I drove it forward and then it would go into reverse no problem. At first it was making a grinding noise like it was not going into gear but then it started working.

Not sure how to check it at WOT supposed to have a dyno?. I was just able to fab up a gauge from parts at menards.

Drove it around the block and it was sketchy at times going into reverse also the fluid level was back to normal.

Might want to bypass the check valve then take pressure readings.
rear servo reading 140 in reverse and 40 in 1st gear
This is not right so you have something going on in there. You can rev the motor up to 3K that should be good enough to get a pressure reading,

so I checked the drain back check valve and it looked clean and the ball pushed in fine. looks like a newer part. read through the whole trans service manual. thinking it could be something in the valve manifold. Looks like fun. Fluid looks pretty dirty and burnt wonder if that is enough to clog a filter. So many things to check ahhhhhh.

Also I put up a pick here but that post is gone. was it too big?

No idea what happened to the pic. I sure didn't remove it. The forum software should automagically resize it, if its really big......

I'd do a filter and flush and go from there. From what I've learned on this forum our tranny's are picky about fluids and temperatures.
