Hopefully finishing this up soon... I was too rough with the new u-joint and it shot. Going to grab a new one tomorrow. A side by side comparison of the 01 and 96 axle showed minor differences. The older axle has slightly longer splines but the same amount as the 01 and are shaped a tad different but the mesh with each other so I don’t see that being an issue. The older axle also has a bushing for the intermediate shaft at the end but the 01 axle did not have one. Not sure if it used one for that year. Any thoughts?

i think the intermediate shaft either had a bushing or bearing to ride on depending on the year of the truck. I think either can be used. Try this web site for parts and some good info -
