Age. It's not exactly a 'common' failure, but, it happens.

reset the PCM, drove 10 miles, couldn’t get it to happen.

Watch it for a while. Chances are, when it gets good and hot, it'll fail again.

More tests done. All data states the volt meter goes to 18 when the voltage gets to 16.7 volts. When the meter went to 18 the DVOM only showed 15.8 volts. It is making me lean toward the gauge cluster being bad.

I have access to AllData which told me when the light comes on. I hooked up a volt meter to constant power and ground which gave me my voltage reading while driving.

Would be interesting to know what the PCM thinks voltage is....... though, it looks like it is indeed a fault with the cluster. On the 01, the cluster gets all its information from the PCM though, via the CTM...... so, if the PCM is seeing correct voltage, but, cluster is displaying the wrong voltage......

That is a relief, I hooked up the volt meter to my dome light socket with the dome light OFF and grounded on the metal from the roof. I just drove it on the highway with the peak voltage being 15.2 no gauge light either... how can I test the PCM voltage?

Need to plug in with a scanner that will read live data, and see what the PCM thinks system voltage is.

So if the pcm thinks the voltage is high, what could happen?
