Default 98 Ram 2500 shifting problems

Hey guys, So I've been in the process of redoing my 2500, put a new engine in her and was fine for about 20 miles then tranny quit working, would shift at really high rpms and i had to pull off the gas for it to actually shift. I assumed it was the governor pressure sensor so i went ahead and repalced that and it seemed ok for about 5 minutes then i lost it all, wont shift into any gear at all, no reverse, drive or anything. After messing around i found out that if i put it in a gear ( N, R, or D ) and put my foot on the brake and rev to 2500-3k it'll pop right into whatever gear and be ok for a bit. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe the new sensor is faulty? its a 98 ram 5.9 Gas 4x4 with the 46re.

Thanks

On the drivers side of the trans, about halfway back, there is an 8 pin connector that plugs straight down into the top of the valve body. (on the outside of the trans) You have likely already played with it. Unplug that, and see if behavior changes. Keep in mind, your trans won't have ANY automatic function. (nor will you have O/D, or TCC) It WILL set some codes. (don't worry about that.) Start in first, and see if it moves, if it does, shift to second, and third, when appropriate. (you will have to downshift manually too.....) If the trans goes into the gear you tell it to, when you tell it to, then it's just the electronics that are bad. If it still exhibits undesireable behavior, time for a rebuild...... if it flares between gears when you try and shift, a band adjustment might take care of that.

If it turns out to be just the electronics, replace the governor pressure sensor, AND solenoid. Get the borg warner heavy duty governor solenoid. Many sellers off a kit with it on Ebay.

Same thing it seems unfortunately, Thought you were on to something as reverse clicked right in place but nothing for forward gears unless i rev'd to 3k. Guess its time to find a manual on rebuilding this type of trans.

Still might just be a band adjustment.... wouldn't hurt to try it.

Also, are you checking fluid level in neutral? Park will give an artificially high reading.

yes I was checking in neutral once engine was up to temp. I’ll have to get a fsm and see the procedure for band adjustment. Anything’s worth a shot before pulling the trans

Ignore the specs in the FSM for band adjustment. Tighten the adjusters to 72 inch pounds, then back them off 2 turns. (both of 'em)
