Replacement Engine

Replacement Engine
I have a 1997 Ram 2500 360 engine that is in need of strength. 284000 on it and not sure how it was serviced before I bought it at 270000 miles. But she's a little weak and my son wants to revive it. Would it be better to go replacement or look for a good known machine shop. I called Jasper and they are around 3200 plus 300 core charge for long block stock motor with 3yr/100000 warranty. Where else should I look at replacement that have a good track record? Is there an engine out there thats slightly built above stock that wouldnt require any tunning just a little beefier? any and all info. would be very helpful for me.
THanks

Thanks guys for the info. I don't actually have to go cheaper if there's a huge quality difference from place to place. I didn't know how engines came either. Meaning if there were some out there that you can buy that come with the plenum fix or if they all come with heads down to bottom end. Thanks again.

I put a Jasper in mine. The first one failed after maybe 3000 miles. They replaced it under warranty. They never told me why it failed. The fact I had one fail has always bugged me. Though, the second one has been in there probably 8 years or so, has around 20k miles and still seems perfect.

Japser products are horrible. When I worked in a shop, we had more Jasper engines/transmissions that were bad right out of the box than we did that were good. Eventually they quit using them. Since then, I've seen other shops go through the same thing. One of my good friends still works as a mechanic and we started talking Jasper, as that's what his shop uses. He's had to do multiple engine jobs 2 or 3 times as they keep getting bad engines from Jasper. They started pushing people towards junk yard motors as they've had better luck with them. The only reason shops like to sell them is because the warranty keeps paying them to replace it, while a junk yard wouldn't.
So, if it was me, I'd stay away from Jasper. I'd either get a reputable local shop to rebuild your current motor, or go with a used engine.

If you have mechanical ability, time, decent tools and a place to perform the work, I would try to find a good used low mileage short block from a junkyard or private owner, clean it up by installing new water pump, brass freeze plugs, double roller timing chain and gear set, oil pump+pickup and install a set of new EQ heads, along with re-gasketing the motor. This would give you a nice strong running motor, as the heads would really wake it up.
