I have a similar problem but not as bad as this fellows. I have an 03 3500 2wd Dully which has been and is still a great truck. (208K to date) After the truck sits for a day 24+ hours when started the truck will not respond or move until it is placed in neutral for a couple of minutes and then it moves and shifts normally all day which involves turning the truck off for a couple of hours in a normal shopping round about day. Recently when the truck sits for less than 24 hours it requires the same treatment until it is ready to go. Fluid and filter were changed a short time ago (20K) when I put a drain plug in the pan and both were OK. The truck has had this habit for over 50K and the shorter sit time started about a month ago.
Any ideas...………...

Ok so get home top of the tranny which was barley touching the bottom of the stick by now and still same symptoms. So I pull the pan. As the fluid was draining it smelled VERY LOUDLY like a cross between burnt rubber and burnt toast that was still in the plastic bag while it was being burnt lol. Don't see any metal shavings or anything and bands still look/feel like they should. I couldn't get the valve body completely out for some reason the park rid wouldn't turn loose and slide out this time. Anyway they don't really show anything but here are the pics with the valve body out and the fluid. I have found a tranny about 7 hours away that came from my exact truck for 700 with no core charge so I can keep this one once it's out and it comes with the torque converter and a 90 day warranty. So that's where we're at. What do y'all think I should do from this point? Are there more checks I could do to make sure getting the donor tranny is my best option? Should I just go ahead and get this one for that $ while I can. Should I get an estimate on fixing what's going on with this one before I decide? I appreciate it again for those that are contributing!!!

Images are showing for me.

The fluid is trash, and likely all of your clutches are burnt. Replace the trans, or rebuild it.

Is the check valve still in the cooler lines? If it is, I would be that it is clogged.

Correct and has the tranny flushed. I would buy the tranny and debit to rebuild yours, I did that a while ago. You'll learn a few things along the way

That's exactly what I've decided to do. I'm getting this one too get the truck back going so I'm not rushed to build it and when I get it done I'll swap them back and maybe can resale this one then.

Pics aren't showing for me, might be my phone though. I was going to delete the Check Valve but from what I understand from it you have to start the truck let it idle in neutral then go, which is to much for me
