Default 46re upgrades

I'm looking for advice for upgrading a 46re in a 1999 ram 1500 with a 5.2. Basically what shift kit or other parts improve shifting or longevity. Thanks for the help, Greg

Check out page 6 of montec's transmission corner thread. He has a list of recommended parts in there for a member that regularly towed a 7000 pound trailer.

Rumor has it, that the internals from the 47 or 48RE will fit into the 46 case as well...... That could be interesting.....

It's not rumor, Everything but one of the drums i believe. I read a detailed article on it somewhere. The only reason you can't use it the 46RE case is a bit smaller and the drum will hit it. It's pretty much what PATC does in the mega viper trans but instead of 47/8 parts they sell their own upgraded/billet parts.

Hhhhmmm.. Interesting. It's not usually the drums that fail though, is it? Isn't it generally clutches/planetary gearsets that give up?

The bigger drum would hold bigger/more clutch plates, wouldn't it?

One of the mods PATC does is more clutches. I think they use a thinner piston plate to account for the additional room required. Not sure if the 47/48 drum is larger diameter, thicker metal, or what.
